I know this is a very basic recipe, but I thought it would be a simple yet delicious way to take part in April’s Monthly Mingle, hosted by Meeta.
It was my first time making hummus and the result was great - recipe from Donna Hay.
Donna Hay’s Hummus
from Modern Classics Book 1
400g drained canned chickpeas
3 tablespoons tahini
3 tablespoons lemon juice – I used lime juice
60ml (¼ cup) water - I used this + 1 ½ tablespoons
½ teaspoon cumin
1 clove crushed garlic
sea salt and cracked black pepper
2 tablespoons olive oil
Process the chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, water, cumin, garlic, salt and pepper in a food processor until combined – I used a blender.
With the motor running, gradually pour the olive oil processing until just smooth.
Makes 1 ¾ cups.
In the kitchen since the age of 11 and having loads of fun with it.
I find hummus both delicious and satisfying - although I have only tried it once, staying at a hotel where mainly vegetarian dishes were offered. My husband did, for some reason, not like it at all.
ReplyDeleteSimple is best! It looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteHummus is a little miracle of a dish -- some ordinary ingredients that come together in a special way. I'd probably add a bit more garlic, because I love it garlicky!
ReplyDeleteLydia and I maybe cousins...I'd probably add a little extra garlic also. Nothing wrong with simple especially when it's hummus, I love this stuff.
ReplyDeleteHummus is one of the our favorite appetizers to prepare. And to serve it with pita bread it's surprising this does not turn into a main course!
ReplyDeletePatricia, one of the beauties of hummus IS that it's so basic, but still so delicious. We make a similarly simple one, and it always gets eaten.
ReplyDeleteOne great use of hummus, by the way, is as a sandwich spread in place of mayo. Spread some on a crusty bread, add a little leftover roasted chicken and maybe some lettuce--wonderful! Tastier and healthier for you than mayo.
Mmm, yummy, yummy hummous! I love the stuff!
ReplyDeleteI just made hummus for the very first time over the easter weekend...and it was a success! :) I used a recipe from a book on Arab cuisine but I have that DH book as well...will try that next :)
ReplyDeleteI am seriously addicted to chickpeas...especially since they have the coolest name...I like to say "chick-peace!" :)
Hummus is always welcome at any occasion. Hummus with some roasted red peppers, blended all together is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteI made hummus once & I had so much of it I was unwell! It's a real delicious dip which is too hard to resist!
ReplyDeleteHmmm..I did not know making hummus can be so simple. But now, I need to google on tahini :O (don't know what's that!)
ReplyDeleteOh Pat, I love hummus lots and lots. :D Nothing is better than a freshly baked turkish bread and hummus. Yours look and soud great!
ReplyDeletePatricia - hummus is delicious. It's so healthy and simple, and you can dress it up so many ways. I like lemon and dill as an a little "extra" flavoring.
ReplyDeleteHummus is one of my mainstays for antipasto. It's so easy to make yourself at home. Much better and more satisfying than buying the ones in the shops.
ReplyDeleteSimple like this totally rocks! What a really good straightforward recipe!
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe and lovely photo. Hummus is always welcome at a party.
ReplyDeleteha! Patricia, we think alike. I was just telling Morven that now that I've tried baba ghanoush, I'd like to try hummus and that I was going to keep my eye for a good recipe.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
xoxo
yum yum yum i adore hummus!!!
ReplyDeletePatricia, this looks awesome - I am definitely going to steal this recipe from you. JB
ReplyDeletePat, I am such big fan of hummus that I refrein from buying it often -can't stop eating it.I love the idea of the crunchy pitta.
ReplyDeleteHi Patricia! Hummus is such a wonderful, simple and flexible dish! I love it spread in sandwiches, and piled high with crunchy veggies. Mmmm...
ReplyDeleteKarin, my husband doesn't like it either. Even better - there's more left for me. :D
ReplyDeleteIlva, thank you!
Lydia, I know you're a garlic fan. I think that in this recipe it would be fantastic!
Tanna, I'm taking your advice.
Veron, I could eat only this and be happy. :)
Terry, I love your idea of using it as a sandwich spread. It sounds unusual and delicious!
Freya, me too, sweetie!
Joey, I first found chickpeas ugly (as a kid) but now I love them - they really seem to have a beak, so cute! :)
Rose, I'm taking note of your suggestion, it must be wonderful with pepppers!
Valentina, the same thing happened to me. I though I was gonna explode or something. :)
Tigerfish, tahini is sesame seed paste. One small jar will be enough for several hummus recipes!
Anh, thank you! I don't even make it that much otherwise I'll eat the whole thing myself. :)
T.W., I'm willing to try all the variations!
Steven, I'm with you 100% - nothing beats homemade food.
Helene, thank you, sweetie!
Elle, thank you! I agree with you, no one can resist.
Lis, I'm dying to make your baba ghanoush!
xx
Linda, it's perfect for you, sweetie!
JB, I'm glad you will - there are many of yours printed at my house, just waiting to be hang in the refrigerator door and prepared. :)
Tina, you're the one to blame for my passion for hummus. ;)
Hi, Gilly! I don't believe it took me 28 years to try it. :D
Thank you all for the wonderful comments!
Hummus fits in everywhere! I love hummus and this is a fantastic entry. Thanks for joining!
ReplyDeleteDelicious looking hummus Patricia!
ReplyDeleteHummus has almost become a staple for me these days so lovely to see how others make it. If you have any leftovers send them my way! Great choice!
ReplyDeleteSometimes simple pleasures are the best pleasures!
ReplyDeleteAri (Baking and Books)
Once I start eating hummus, I find it hard to stop! Yours looks delicous, but you would have to hide it from me, because I would eat it all up from everyone!
ReplyDeleteI keep promising myself I will make this.
ReplyDeleteBut first, Sunday night supper. . .
Meeta, I'm so glad you liked it! It was my pleasure to take part, I intend to do it again!
ReplyDeleteKristen, thank you, sweetie!
Truffle, I took half to my coworker, who loves it too. Next time I'll send it to you! :D
Ari, you've said it all, dear!
Sher, I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one having trouble resisting the bowl of hummus. ;)
Since João won't eat it, you and I get to share, how's that? :)
Mimi, you just made me hungry, sweetie. ;)
