I wasn’t much inspired to post today, since it is about a recipe that did not work out, but that changed after I read Pea’s text.
I bookmarked the recipe last week and couldn’t wait to try it – I love baking with yeast and the idea of a banana honey roll seemed amazing. And that roll was one of Jamie’s recipes. I was sure it would be delicious.
Well, I wouldn’t know about that – the bread came out so weird I did not feel like putting it in my mouth. It was far too moist and dense, heavy... It did not look like bread to me. I’m no expert, but I have baked yeasted breads hundreds of times and the results were pretty good. And Jamie’s bread was anything but good (I’m glad I halved the recipe).
I won’t let this recipe put me off my willing to make yeasted banana bread. So, if you have any suggestions or recipes to share, I’m all ears, oops, eyes. :)

Oh, I'm so sorry it didn't turn out well, Patricia... Please resist the urge to put JO on your knee and give him a good whacking. You know, moist and dense are not at all bad in my book. Maybe it went overboard, though... How was the taste at least?
ReplyDeleteI know you won't believe me when I say it still looks really really good and it's making my stomach grumble at 1AM in the morning but trust me when I say I honestly do!
It looks like a really doughy under cooked biscuit. Yet I still wouldn't mind trying some. Maybe that's just the lack of lunch talking. I'm sure you will find a winning recipe.

ReplyDeleteoh my god!!! A Jaime Oliver recipe bummed out on you? I think I need to bookmark this - it's got to be a one in a million! I've never made his banana bread before though. Could it be that the yeast in combination with the bananas make it heavy and dense!

ReplyDeleteWell, certainly doesn't look like a traditional banana bread -- but even when things go awry in the kitchen, it's fun. And if it tastes fine, don't worry about how it looks!

ReplyDeleteIf it makes you feel better, I've tried making this as well with exactly the same result. Heavy, dense and awful. I think it is just a bad recipe.
ReplyDeleteI can see why you halved the recipe, his original must make A LOT of bread! But I can also see why you wanted to try it, it sounds really good. I wonder what went wrong? Still, I'm glad you posted it. Good or bad, it's fun to know what you're up to. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer. You know, I've had a Jamie Oliver cake recipe sitting on my desk for a LONG time and I'm hesitant to make it since I saw a bad review on someone's blog. I think he must have some real winners and some real duds!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that weird when a recipe from someone you trust didn't work out? I always assume I blew it somehow, but there are those recipes out there that just don't work. Live, learn, and move on, I say.

ReplyDeleteI've tried some recipes from lovable Jacques Torres and equally lovable Jacques Pepín and they both failed miserably. Yet, some of their other recipes have been successful. You just never know until you take the plunge. Dud or not, it certainly looks good!

It's certainly denser and moister than plain bread, but I like its chewiness and the (fairly subtle) banana flavour/aroma.
I cooked mine for 20 minutes at 200C fan-forced, which is effectively a bit more than the recipe recommends. I also needed to add more water -- my three bananas were large enough that the pureed banana didn't need any topping up to get to the specified quantity.
